There are several of these on my bench, one of them is the machine on this site’s homepage, and if I were starting my solo fleet again I’d still build it on the Zyber 8S. TinyChipHub is the shop most Bitaxe people know for boards and cooling parts; the Zyber line is their own hardware, and the 8S is the sweet spot in it - eight Bitaxe-class chips, open AxeOS firmware, 6.4 TH/s for $269.

The take

What sold me is where the 8S sits. On one side, the NerdQaxe++: the same open-firmware, multi-chip idea, 4.8 TH/s for $349. On the other, the Avalon Nano 3S: similar money and hashrate, but a sealed box running Canaan’s closed firmware. The Zyber 8S takes the open firmware from the first and the odds-per-pound of the second, and undercuts both. The catch is the obvious one: it’s the house brand of a small Hong Kong-registered shop, not a Bitmain or a Canaan, and there isn’t a big community writing guides for it the way there is for the NerdQaxe. You’re trusting TinyChipHub’s build quality; mine haven’t given me a reason to regret it yet.

What the numbers actually mean

Around £33 per TH/s makes it the cheapest open-firmware hashrate on this site, and 6.4 TH/s buys a 1-in-~2,750 shot at a block each year - the best odds of anything here that isn’t a heater or a rack unit. One thing the listings bury and I’ll say plainly: that 6.4 is the OC-mode figure, not the number you see the second you power it on. There’s an overclock toggle in the AxeOS web UI that lifts it from nominal to the rated 6.4+ while holding power around 140 watts, and mine all live with it enabled - it’s a two-second job, but flip it before you judge the hashrate, or you’ll think you’ve been short-changed. A couple of TinyChipHub owners tune past that to a steady ~7 TH/s, though getting there took some back-and-forth with support. Efficiency is the weak spot: ~21.9 J/TH is Avalon territory, well behind a single BM1370 Bitaxe’s 15, so it costs more per unit of work to run. At 140 watts that’s about 34p a day at UK prices. AxeOS means the Bitaxe overclocking principles carry straight over, eight chips at a time, and everything’s on show in the open acrylic frame - which ships in the box, along with the PSU, plus a small 1.9-inch colour screen that cycles hashrate, temperature and power, and keeps the best difficulty share it’s found between reboots so you can see your near-misses at a glance. My twin-fan stands are their add-on cooling kit, worth the extra if you tune upward; the fans lean on 85-100% under a full OC load, so it’s quiet at idle and audible when it’s working. Keep it somewhere below 25C too - above 30C mine get flakier on long runs, which matches what TinyChipHub tell you.

Who should get one - and who shouldn’t

Get one if you’re past your first Bitaxe and want real odds without giving up the open-firmware world - or if, like me, you’re accumulating a fleet and care about pounds-per-terahash more than badges. It’s also the rare product where the maker sells every spare part on the same site, which matters more than people think when a fan dies in year two.

The honest wrinkle is that these want a little settling-in. Mine were sulky in the first few days - the AxeOS dashboard would go unresponsive while the chips kept hashing away underneath, wanting a reboot or two before it steadied - and other TinyChipHub owners describe the same, right down to one whose Zyber only came good at ~7 TH/s after a support ticket. There’s a public “not hashing” thread on r/BitAxe as well, which is the flip side of a small-brand board: real people hit real snags, and there isn’t the deep Bitaxe-sized wiki to fall back on. Once mine were bedded in they’ve run weeks at a stretch between power-downs, but I wouldn’t hand one to someone who won’t reboot a box or email a shop in week one.

Don’t get one if brand reassurance matters to you - a NerdQaxe++ has the community, an Avalon has the corporation - or if you want something sealed and silent for a living room shelf. It’s an open frame with fans and everything on show, and it looks like lab equipment because it more or less is. I happen to like that; plenty of households wouldn’t.
