You like the idea of a Bitaxe but you don’t want a project. You want a box that turns on, joins the Wi-Fi from an app on your phone, and mines. The Canaan Avalon Nano 3S is that box, and it’ll warm the corner of the room while it runs. This is a proper commercial ASIC from Canaan, a publicly listed manufacturer, not an open hobby board, and it trades tinkerability for the most hashrate-per-pound in this lineup.
The take
Think of this as the ASIC answer to a Bitaxe. Where the Bitaxe and NerdQAxe hand you open firmware and a soldering-iron culture, the Nano 3S hands you a sealed unit, an app, and 6 TH/s that just runs. You open the Avalon Family app, pair over Bluetooth, hand it your Wi-Fi and a pool, and it goes. That’s the whole appeal if fiddling isn’t your idea of fun. The catch is it’s closed all the way down. Canaan’s A1246-family chips are proprietary, the firmware is theirs, and you take what you’re given - which means no native undervolting and no overclocking, none of the frequency-and-voltage tuning that’s half the fun of an open board. The modes on offer are the modes you get.
The three modes, and where mine lives
There’s a real spread here, and it changes the character of the thing. High mode is the headline: around 6 TH/s at roughly 140 W, which works out to the advertised 23.3 J/TH. The catch nobody mentions until it happens
The reliability worry with this unit isn’t the noise, it’s the power side. Sustained 140 W through a USB-C connector is a lot to ask, and owners across r/BitcoinMining report the USB-C port and the supplied power brick melting or dying outright - common enough that reviewers ran burned-unit long-term follow-ups and a third party now sells a cooling dock aimed squarely at the problem. It’s not a guaranteed failure, but it’s a known weak spot, and it’s the reason I’d keep an eye on the connector for the first few weeks. The whole point of a Bitaxe is that you can learn from it and change it, and the Nano 3S deliberately closes that door: no tuning, no custom profiles, take-what-you’re-given. Skip it too if it’s going on a desk in a silent home office and you’ll run it flat out, because high mode is still the warmest and busiest-sounding option here even if it’s no longer the screamer the old Nano 3 was.
