The Bitcoin network, right now

I check these most days. Not because they change what my Bitaxe is doing on the shelf - nothing changes that - but because they're the weather the whole network runs in. Pulled live from the chain: what a coin's worth this minute, how much hashrate you're really up against, and where the trends have been heading.

Reward is the 3.125 BTC subsidy plus the transaction fees the finder keeps. A solo miner who strikes a block takes the lot.

The last year, and what it means

The single-number tiles tell you where things stand. The trend tells you where they're going - which, for a miner, is usually the more useful half.

Network hashrate

· 1 year

The line that matters most to a home miner. Every exahash added is more competition for the same 144 blocks a day - as this climbs, your odds get longer, not shorter.

Difficulty

· 1 year

Difficulty chases hashrate. It retargets every fortnight to keep blocks landing about ten minutes apart, whatever the world plugs in. Rising difficulty is rising competition, plainly stated.

BTC price

· 1 year

What a found block is actually worth. For a solo miner this is the size of the prize, not the odds of winning it - a bigger number doesn't make the lottery any easier.

Fear & Greed

· 60 days

Sentiment, not fundamentals. Useful for a sense of the mood, useless for timing. I keep it well away from any decision about the miners on my shelf.

Your odds from here

Every block a home miner finds is luck, not income. That's just how it works, and it's half the reason I like the hobby. So here's the number that actually counts - roughly how often a machine your size would get lucky against the hashrate above.

Want to plug in your own machine and your own electricity price? The lottery-odds calculator does exactly that, on the same live data.
