This is where home mining stops being cute and starts being serious. The Bitmain Antminer S21 is a proper industrial machine, one of the most efficient SHA-256 miners you can put your hands on, and it makes no apology for being loud, hot, and hungry. Run in the right place, it’s a workhorse. Run in the wrong one, it’ll drive you spare.
The take
The S21 is what you buy when you want maximum hashrate per watt and you’ve got somewhere to hide the noise. The efficiency is excellent, the build is farm-grade, and 200 TH/s puts real weight behind whatever you point it at. But be clear-eyed: this is not a living-room machine, and anyone who tells you otherwise hasn’t stood next to one. It roars like a vacuum cleaner that never switches off, and it throws out serious heat. In a garage, a basement, an outbuilding, or a soundproofed box, it’s a brilliant bit of kit. Within earshot of the sofa, it’s a mistake. Get the siting right and it rewards you. Get it wrong and no amount of efficiency will make you happy.
What the numbers actually mean
200 TH/s is a lot of hashrate for one box, and paired with about 17.5 J/TH it’s one of the best efficiency figures on the market, which is exactly why farms buy them by the pallet. For home use the numbers you feel are power and noise. At 3500W it draws around 84 kWh a day, so roughly 25 pounds daily in the UK or about 14 dollars in the US at typical rates, and whether that turns a profit swings with your electricity price and the network difficulty on the day. At 75 dB it’s properly loud, a constant vacuum-cleaner drone that demands its own isolated space. On solo, even 200 TH/s is a tiny slice of a network measured in hundreds of exahash, so a solo block is still a lottery win, just with better odds than a small miner. Most owners pool for steady payouts. The stock firmware works, but Braiins OS or Vnish let you tune power and efficiency to your electricity rate, which is worth doing on a machine this thirsty.
The S21 is a family, not a single machine
When people say “S21” they usually mean the base 200 TH/s air-cooled unit, but the badge now covers a whole range, and it’s worth knowing where the one you’re looking at sits. The S21 Pro pushes about 234 TH/s at roughly 3510W for around 15 J/TH, a genuine step up in efficiency on the same 3-board air layout. The S21 XP goes further again, about 270 TH/s at close to 3645W for a rated 13.5 J/TH, and one 72-hour bench test came back at 269 TH/s and 13.7 J/TH, near enough to spec to trust. Then there are the hydro units: the S21 Hydro at roughly 335 TH/s and the S21 XP Hydro at around 473 TH/s, both liquid-cooled, both pulling well over 5kW. The base S21, S21+ and S21 Hydro run Bitmain’s BM1368 chip; the Pro and XP moved to the newer BM1370. For a home miner the upshot is simple: the pricier variants buy you better efficiency, but every one of them is still a loud, hot, high-power industrial box, and the hydro ones add an external cooling loop and often three-phase power on top. None of that changes the basic verdict below.
The electricity is the real gatekeeper
The number that stops most home installs isn’t the price, it’s the wiring. At 3500W the air-cooled S21 will not run off a standard 120V outlet in North America; it wants a dedicated 240V circuit, which in practice means a 20A 240V breaker and proper heavy-gauge cabling. In the UK a normal 13A three-pin plug tops out around 3000W, so the S21 sits right at or over the limit of a standard socket, and the sensible route is an electrician wiring in a dedicated 16A or 32A Commando socket straight to the consumer unit. That’s before you deal with the heat, which comes out at roughly 12,000 BTU an hour, the same as a serious space heater. Owners who make it work tend to duct the exhaust somewhere useful, a garage, a shop, a basement they want warm over winter, rather than treating it as waste. The hydro variants are quieter at the box, around 50 dB, but they reject their heat through an external cooling unit that’s noisy in its own right and usually needs three-phase power, which pushes them out of realistic home territory entirely.
Firmware, and a locking caveat
The stock firmware hashes fine, but on a machine this thirsty the reason to look at Braiins OS+ or Vnish is control: per-chip autotuning, undervolting, and underclocking, all of which let you trade a little hashrate for a lot less heat and noise. That trade is exactly what makes an S21 liveable at home. One thing to check before you buy on the strength of custom firmware, though: newer batches from late 2024 onward ship with Amlogic control boards and locked Bitmain firmware, and flashing third-party firmware on those can mean an SD-card downgrade or a hardware unlock step rather than a clean upload. If tuning is central to your plan, confirm the control board first.
What tends to go wrong
For an industrial machine the S21 is reliable, but the failure modes repair shops see most are worth planning around. The common one is cracked solder joints on the hashboards, brought on by rapid hot-to-cold cycling, so the units that fail early are often the ones rebooting repeatedly in a cold, unheated space. The other is self-inflicted: melted power connectors from cheap, undersized cabling that can’t take a continuous 3500W draw, which is a good argument for spending on proper cables and not skimping. And because the three-board layout runs hot and dense, intake air has to be moved aggressively or the unit throws temperature faults and derates itself, losing hashrate exactly when the room warms up. Keep it cool, keep it fed with clean power, and it’ll grind away for years.
Who should get one - and who shouldn’t
Get one if you have a garage, basement, or outbuilding where the noise won’t bother anyone, and you want the best terahash-per-watt you can reasonably buy. It’s ideal for the serious home miner who’s ready to treat siting, airflow, and firmware tuning as part of the hobby. If you can host it properly, it’s one of the strongest machines here.
Don’t get one if the only place for it is a room you actually use. No case, no cupboard, no wishful thinking makes 75 dB quiet enough to live with. Skip it too if your electricity is expensive and you’ve no use for the heat, because the sums get unforgiving fast. But for anyone with the right loud, well-ventilated corner and a taste for real hashrate, the S21 earns its keep.
