When people ask for a real ASIC they can keep indoors without moving out, this is usually the answer. The Canaan Avalon Q packs proper industrial-class hashrate into a box that’s been deliberately tamed for noise, and it’s happy to double as a room heater while it hashes. It’s the bridge between a desk toy and a farm machine.
The take
The Avalon Q is Canaan’s attempt to make an ASIC you’d actually tolerate in the house, and it mostly pulls it off. It’s far quieter than a farm miner and it looks the part on a shelf, but there’s no getting around the physics: nearly 1.7 kilowatts has to go somewhere, and that somewhere is your room, as heat and a steady hum. If you’ve got a cold spare room, a garage, or a workshop that could use warming, that heat is a feature and the machine is a treat. If you’re in a small warm flat with nowhere for the heat to escape, think hard before you buy. Treated as a heater that happens to earn sats, it’s a lovely thing. Treated as free money, it’ll disappoint.
What the numbers actually mean
At 90 TH/s the Avalon Q gives you serious hashrate by home standards, roughly the output of dozens of desktop miners in one box. Efficiency of about 18.6 J/TH in super mode is properly good, close to industrial machines, which is why it can hash hard without a farm-grade power bill. There’s a quiet twist worth knowing, though: the efficiency figure improves when you back off. Because the chip voltage drops in the lower power states, reviewers measuring eco mode saw it settle near 846W for around 53 TH/s, which works out to roughly 16 J/TH, actually better than the flat-out super figure. So the mode that’s quietest and coolest is also the one wasting the least per terahash, and it’s the mode most homes should sit in.
The catch is that the power bill still exists at any mode. 1674W run flat out is around 40 kWh a day, so plan for roughly 12 pounds a day in the UK or getting on for 7 dollars in the US at typical home rates. Whether that pays depends entirely on your electricity price and the Bitcoin difficulty on the day, and at domestic rates it’s often a slim margin or a small loss, offset by the heat you’d have paid for anyway. Reviewers are blunt about this: unless your power is genuinely cheap or you’re counting the electricity as a heating bill you’d have run regardless, the Q loses money on the coins alone in 2026. On solo it improves your lottery odds over a small miner but stays a long shot, so most people pool for steady payouts and keep solo as a hopeful sideline.
The noise, measured against the marketing
This is where the honest numbers and the sales copy pull apart, so it’s worth laying both out. Hands-on measurement from The Hobbyist Miner put the Q in the high-30s dB in eco, low-40s in standard, and around 47 dB flat out in super, which is a steady hum a room away rather than anything that clears a house. The vendor and the European retailer Mineshop tell a louder story: an official 45 to 65 dB envelope, with Mineshop’s own listing warning that at the top end it’s “not ideal for apartment mining” because the hum carries through walls. Those two accounts don’t fully reconcile, and the gap is probably down to where you stand and which mode you run, so the fair read is that eco and standard are living-room friendly while super is a utility-room, garage or basement sound. Either way it’s a step up from the desktop Nano, which sits in the low-to-high-30s: the Q’s larger fans move a lot more air because they have a lot more heat to shift.
The heat is real, and there’s no thermostat
An ASIC turns effectively all of its power into heat, so in super mode the Q is a 1.7 kW space heater that happens to earn sats, somewhere around 5,700 BTU per hour of output. Reviewers have genuinely run these to warm a room through winter, then hit the obvious wall in spring when the heat stops being a bonus and starts being a problem you have to exhaust or switch off. What it won’t do is warm a house or a large basement: it can only ever put out as much heat as it draws, so treat it as an auxiliary heater for one room, not central heating. The important honesty here is that there’s no room thermostat built in. You don’t set a target temperature; you manage the heat by hand, dropping from super to standard or eco in the app, or using the scheduling feature to hash on cold nights and cheaper power hours. It heats by brute output, not by sensing the room.
The sealed box: app, dashboard and firmware
Setup is app-first through the Avalon Family app, pairing over Bluetooth to hand the miner your Wi-Fi (a front-mounted USB dongle on 2.4 GHz, or wired Ethernet if you’d rather), after which the advanced settings live on a web dashboard you reach by the IP shown on the front LCD. It’s tidy once it’s going, with room for up to three pools, though owners have hit the odd first-run quirk, one unit wouldn’t broadcast Bluetooth for pairing until the physical reset was held down for a few seconds to clear its factory-test state. The bigger thing to understand is that it’s closed all the way down. The firmware is Canaan’s own, you get the three factory presets and nothing else, and there’s no undervolting, no overclocking and no per-chip tuning. Nor is there a custom-firmware scene like the one that grew up around the open Bitaxe boards. If tuning and tinkering is half your reason for buying, this is the wrong machine; if you want it to just run, that closed system is exactly the appeal.
Power, and the super-mode trap
The Q takes a universal 110 to 240V supply, which sounds forgiving until you push it hard. Eco and standard sit comfortably on a normal North American 15A/120V wall circuit. Super mode does not: pulling toward 1,800W it’s drawing around 15A on 120V, and with the 80 percent continuous-load rule a 15A breaker is only good for about 1,440W sustained, so reviewers report it tripping breakers or, worse, cooking outlets over time. To run super on 120V you want a dedicated 20A circuit; move to 240V and the amperage headache disappears entirely. UK buyers on 230V are on the right side of this by default, but the lesson stands: plan the socket before the miner arrives, not after.
Reliability, and a dissenting voice
Most of the coverage is positive, but it’s worth airing the other side. At least one prominent channel published a straight “don’t buy the Avalon Q” take for 2026, arguing the fans are low quality, the efficiency is unremarkable for standard residential power, and pointing to a unit of theirs that failed outright. That’s one reviewer’s experience rather than a documented failure rate, and it should be weighed as such, but it’s a fair counterpoint to the glowing videos: a home ASIC lives or dies on its fans and PSU, both of which run hard here, and a machine that costs well over a thousand pounds deserves a sceptical eye on long-term reliability. Nothing in the wider owner chatter points to an epidemic, but this isn’t a machine with years of field history behind it either.
Who should get one - and who shouldn’t
Get one if you want real, respectable hashrate but can’t or won’t run a screaming farm miner in the house. It’s ideal for someone with a cold room to warm, a tolerance for a gentle hum, and eyes open about the running cost. If the heat is useful to you, the maths gets a lot friendlier, because you’re offsetting heating you’d have run anyway.
Don’t get one if you live somewhere the heat has nowhere to go, or if a summer bedroom is the only spot for it. Skip it too if you’re judging purely on pounds per terahash, since bare industrial miners give you more hashrate for the money if you can house them. But as a home ASIC you can live alongside, warmed room and all, the Avalon Q is one of the sanest picks going.
For what it’s worth, I went through this exact decision myself and landed on the Avalon Mini 3 instead. The Q gives you more hashrate on paper, but the Mini 3 reads even more like a proper house heater, it runs quieter in the rooms I’d actually keep it in, and for winter heating the trade suited me better. If your priority is the most odds you can house and you’ve a room that will take a bit more fan noise, the Q is the bigger machine; if what you want is a quiet heater that happens to hash, the Mini 3 is where I went.

Balanced / standard
Standard mode ~1300-1450W, around 79-80 TH/s
Measured ~1371W and 79.6 TH/s at 41-42 dB; a middle ground that still fits some home circuits and lands near 17 J/TH.
Max hashrate / super

Is the Avalon Q actually quiet?+
Quiet for an ASIC, not quiet for a room. It sits around 50 dB, closer to a dishwasher than a jet engine, so you can share a house with it. You still wouldn't want it next to your pillow.
How much heat does it put out?+
