You want a Bitaxe, but you also want to look at it. The Bitaxe Touch is the one with a screen on the front, a proper 4.3 inch touchscreen that cycles through your hashrate, the Bitcoin price, the latest blocks and the mining controls. Underneath the glass it’s still an open-source lottery board, just a faster one than usual, with two BM1370 chips pulling 2.15 TH/s off the shelf.
The straight take
I like this thing more than I expected to. Most lottery miners are a bare board and a heatsink you tuck out of sight. This one earns its place on the desk because it’s nice to look at and nice to fiddle with, and the eight dashboards get used rather than sitting there as a gimmick. The firmware is still fully open AxeOS, so nothing’s been locked down to pay for the screen. What has gone up is the price. You’re paying a clear premium over a plain Gamma for the display and the dual-chip board, and the odds of actually finding a block haven’t moved much. So buy it for what it is: the best-looking way to run a real SHA-256 miner in a room you actually sit in.
What the numbers actually mean
2.15 TH/s is roughly double a single-chip Gamma, which sounds like a lot until you set it against a network measured in hundreds of exahash. It’s still a lottery ticket, just a slightly thicker stack of them. The efficiency is the good news. About 17 J/TH from dual BM1370 silicon is right in line with the best small miners, so you’re not paying for the hashrate in wasted watts. Power draw of 43W means it costs a few quid a month to leave on, and the 35 dB noise floor keeps it quiet enough for a nightstand. The one wrinkle owners flag is heat: it runs a touch warmer than a bare Bitaxe, into the low 60s Celsius on the harder modes, so give it some air rather than boxing it in.
Three stock modes sit on the touchscreen: low around 2.34 TH/s at 41W, medium around 2.44 at 45W, high around 2.67 at 48W, all reachable with a tap and none of them touching the firmware. Solo Satoshi quotes a 3.06 TH/s ceiling for a fully wound-up unit at 750 MHz and 1200 mV, and I’d read that as a headline best case rather than a daily setting. If you do climb, the number to watch isn’t the chip temperature, it’s the voltage regulators. Solo Satoshi’s own overclocking guide has the VRMs hitting 94C at 800 MHz without extra MOSFET heatsinks, so the regulators cook before the ASIC does. That’s why the sensible owner overclocks I’ve seen sit around 700 MHz and 2.85 TH/s, holding near 17 J/TH at a roughly one percent error rate, rather than chasing the marketing figure.
The screen and the firmware, in practice
The touchscreen is the whole point, so it’s worth knowing how it’s wired. AxeOS runs the mining on the ESP32-S3, the same open firmware as any other Bitaxe, and the display is driven by a second, separate layer called BAP-GT-TOUCH sitting on top of the Bitaxe accessory port. That split matters at update time: you flash AxeOS over USB-C through the browser webflasher, but the screen firmware is a second job you flash separately with esptool, and owners get caught out expecting one update to cover both. It’s not hard, it’s just two steps where you assumed one.
The screen itself is genuinely useful rather than a sticker. It cycles through live hashrate, watts and J/TH, chip temperature and fan speed, a block clock and the latest blocks pulled from mempool.space, a Bitcoin price ticker, a hashrate graph and the Wi-Fi setup with an on-screen keyboard, so you can commission the thing without ever opening a browser. The honest downside owners report is that the display can stick on “syncing” or freeze a few minutes after boot, usually just after a firmware update, while the miner underneath keeps hashing perfectly happily. It’s a screen-firmware and network wrinkle rather than a dead miner, but it’s a slightly awkward one to hit on a board whose entire premium is the screen.
Who should get one - and who shouldn’t
Get one if you want the miner to be part of the room. If you’ll enjoy glancing at a live block clock and a price ticker, if you like open firmware you can tweak, and you don’t mind paying extra for the presentation, this is the pick of the touchscreen boards by a distance. It’s also a lovely first miner for someone you’re trying to nudge into Bitcoin, because it explains itself.
Don’t get one if you’re counting pennies per terahash. A plain Gamma gives you similar efficiency for a lot less, and a sealed ASIC gives you more raw hashrate again. The Touch is the fun choice, not the frugal one, and the harder heads on r/BitAxe will happily tell you the screen is a gimmick you could skip for the same electricity and a cheaper headless board. They’ve got a point on the maths. Skip it too if it’s going in a cupboard where nobody will ever see the screen, because then you’re paying for a feature you’ve hidden.

An owner reported roughly 2.85 TH/s at about 17 J/TH with a 0.9 to 1.2 percent error rate. Push voltage up and the error rate drops but efficiency slips towards 19 J/TH. Watch the VR temperature, not the ASIC: on the GT platform the voltage regulators are the first thing to cook when you climb past 750 MHz.

Is the Bitaxe Touch worth the premium over a Gamma?+
Only if you want the screen. The Turbo Touch pushes 2.15 TH/s on dual BM1370 chips, so it's roughly double a single-chip Gamma, but you're paying a fair bit extra for the 4.3 inch touchscreen and the eight dashboards. Buy it for the object, not the odds.
Does the touchscreen actually do anything useful?+
It flips through live hashrate, Bitcoin price, block height, latest blocks and the mining controls, all pulled from the hardware or mempool.space. You don't need a browser open to see how it's doing. It's a nice-to-have, not a need-to-have.
What power supply does it need?+
Not a USB-C phone charger. The Touch runs on the GT 801 platform, so it wants 12V DC through an XT30 connector, which is included. Draw sits around 43W, so it's still cheap to leave running.
