This is the serious end of home mining, the machine you buy when you want the best terahash-per-watt on air and you’ve got somewhere to hide the noise. The Antminer S21 Pro does 234 TH/s at 15 J/TH, and it makes exactly as much racket as that implies. Put it in the right room and it’s a workhorse. Put it in the wrong one and you’ll hate it within a day.

The straight take

The S21 Pro is the efficiency pick of the air-cooled S21 family. Where the standard S21 runs the older BM1368 at 17.5 J/TH, the Pro moves to the newer BM1370 and lands at 15, which on a machine pulling 3.5 kilowatts is a difference you feel on the bill. It isn’t the top of the range any more (the S21 XP pushes 270 TH/s at 13.5 J/TH above it), but on air the Pro is the sensible efficiency stretch. The build is farm-grade, the hashrate is real weight, and for anyone treating home mining as a proper hobby it’s one of the strongest boxes going. But be clear-eyed about the cost of entry, and I don’t just mean the price. This is not a living-space machine, full stop. It roars like a vacuum cleaner that never switches off, throws out close to 12,000 BTU an hour, and wants a dedicated 240V circuit before it will even switch on. In a garage, a basement or an insulated shed with the right feed it’s brilliant. Anywhere you can hear it, or anywhere without the electrics for it, it’s a mistake. Get the siting and the circuit right and it rewards you handsomely. Get either wrong and no spec sheet will save the relationship.

What the numbers actually mean

234 TH/s at 15 J/TH is close to the front of the pack for an air-cooled miner, which is exactly why farms buy them by the pallet and why it’s the S21 worth stretching for. It ships in a few flavours (220, 234 and 245 TH/s, all rated at the same 15 J/TH), and independent testing has the 234T holding its rated hashrate at a 25C ambient, with thermal throttling kicking in once the intake air gets past about 35C. For home use, though, the numbers you actually live with are power and noise. At 3510W it draws around 84 kWh a day, so roughly 25 pounds in the UK or about 14 dollars in the US, and whether that pays swings with your electricity rate and the difficulty on the day. At 75 dB it’s a constant drone that needs its own isolated space, no two ways about it, and it dumps close to 12,000 BTU an hour of waste heat that has to go somewhere. On solo, even 234 TH/s is a thin slice of a network measured in hundreds of exahash, so a solo block is still a lottery, just with better odds than a small board. Most owners pool.

The bit the spec sheet buries: power and siting

This is where the S21 Pro stops behaving like a home appliance. The integrated PSU wants 220 to 277V, and at 220V it pulls around 16 amps, which in North America means a dedicated 240V, 20-amp double-pole breaker (the same class of circuit as an electric dryer or oven), professionally wired. It will not run natively on a standard 110V US wall socket, and no amount of good intentions changes that. UK and EU owners on 230V mains have an easier time, but it still wants its own dedicated circuit rather than sharing a ring with the kettle. Add the noise and the heat to that, and the honest picture is a hosting-class machine that some dedicated people happen to run at home, not a plug-and-play box. Owners who get on with it tend to have already sorted a proper PDU, an isolated loud space, and somewhere for the heat to be useful.

Firmware and the things that go wrong

The stock Bitmain OS works out of the box, but on a machine this hungry the reason to look at custom firmware is efficiency, not headline hashrate. Braiins OS+, Vnish and LuxOS all support the platform, and Braiins publishes autotuning gains of around 13 percent (up towards 265 TH/s at roughly 13.2 J/TH) for a negligible power rise, which is a vendor best case rather than a promise, and it voids the Bitmain warranty. There’s a catch worth knowing before you buy secondhand: later batches reportedly ship with locked control boards that block third-party flashing, so if custom firmware matters to you, check the batch before you commit. On reliability, the machine is generally solid but the 5nm chips are thermally fussy, and the fault owners report most often is the web interface showing two hashboards instead of three, which is usually a data ribbon cable shaken loose by vibration rather than a dead board, so reseating comes before any RMA. The standard Bitmain warranty runs 365 days from purchase.

Who should get one - and who shouldn’t

Get one if you have a garage, basement or outbuilding where the noise won’t reach anyone, a dedicated 240V circuit to feed it, and you want the best efficiency you can reasonably buy on air. It’s made for the serious home miner who’s happy to treat siting, airflow, wiring and firmware tuning as part of the fun, or for anyone already running hosting-grade infrastructure. Host it properly and it’s one of the best machines on this site.

Don’t get one if the only spot for it is a room you use, because no case and no cupboard makes 75 dB liveable next to a desk or a bed. Don’t get one if you’re on standard 110V US residential power with no dedicated circuit, because it simply won’t run. And skip it if your electricity is dear and you’ve no use for the heat, because the sums turn unforgiving fast at 3.5 kilowatts. This is an industrial unit wearing a home-miner label, so be honest with yourself about the space and the electrics before the parcel arrives. For anyone with the right loud, airy corner, the wiring to match, and a taste for real hashrate, though, the S21 Pro is the efficiency benchmark to beat.

Braiins publishes autotuning gains of around 13 percent hashrate for a negligible power rise, which actually improves efficiency. Vendor figure, treat as best case. Keep chip temperatures under about 85C and voids the Bitmain warranty.
